GEOGRAPHY

Morgan County is in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains with a north/south pattern of valleys and ridges. Cacapon Mountain divides the county (N/S); Sleepy Creek Mountain defines the eastern border. The Potomac River defines the northern border with Maryland; the Cacapon River runs north on the western side of Cacapon Mountain to empty into the Potomac at the town of Great Cacapon.

Several major runs and creeks also drain the county including Sleepy Creek, Sir Johns Run and Warm Springs Run.

Numerous springs issue warm mineral water at constant flow and temperature of 74æF in Berkeley Springs State Park within the town. The springs have been used since pre-colonial times as a health spa. They also provide the source for the town water supply from Berkeley Springs Water Works.

Hardwood and pine forests cover 79% of the county's land area.

Highest Point - Cacapon Mountain at 2320 feet

There is shale, limestone and glass sand in the county, the latter mined commercially by U.S. Silica Company in a plant north of Berkeley Springs.
